Brief
Temples, pyramids or cathedrals: some of the greatest architectural masterpieces of all time were not erected to respond to immanent needs, but were built as an expression of a community’s faith, of a persistent and insatiable desire for transcendence.
Much can be learnt from sacred architecture, because it responds to the most special needs of humans, and the care architecture historically devoted to the divine must be given to public spaces, workplaces or dwellings, in order to value the dignity of the human being.
It is for these reasons that we created the world’s first course in ‘Spiritual Architecture’, to draw on the experience of sacred architecture in various cultures and religions and thus train designers capable of responding to the human being’s need for meaning, generating places that are not only functional, but - more generally - of psychological and spiritual wellbeing.
Through an anthropological and multi-religious approach, participants will have the opportunity to develop methodologies and knowledge to generate meditative and meaningful architecture in both sacred and non-religious spaces.
The course will focus on technique and composition and it will consist of 88 hours of frontal teaching, 32 hours of workshops and numerous contributions by renowned professionals. At the end of the training course, Yacademy placement office will guarantee each student an internship/collaboration proposal within the partner firms.

Design workshop
Giuseppe Zampieri / David Chipperfield Architects Milan
The workshop will provide an opportunity for practical synthesis through which to test all the notions that will be provided by the other teaching modules, guaranteeing strategic responses to a real architectural project. The workshop, conducted in collaboration with Franchi Umberto Marmi, will look at the reuse of an old disused quarry at the famous marble quarries of Carrara. Excavated in the heart of the Apuan Alps and overlooking the magnificent shores of Massa, the Carrara quarries are a marvel of interaction between man and nature, as they are the result of a terrific landscape, sculpted and shaped by centuries of excavation and extraction. This place, thanks to its anthropisation, really is one of the most evocative landscapes on the planet, where immense steps, geometric voids, gaps and multiple levels sculpt mountains as white as the snow that frequently covers them. In this same place, centuries ago, artists such as Michelangelo or Canova chose their marble blocks to sculpt masterpieces that have written the history of art. Places that naturally suggest a feeling of spirituality and recollection, thanks to their historical and scenic charm, emphasised by the majesty of environments whose scale greatly exceeds that of human beings. Therefore, they are a privileged context for conducting a design dedicated to the space for transcendence. In the immaculate heart of the Carrara quarries, at Ravalunga, students will have the opportunity to create a place for the spirit: an interreligious place of meditation, where - regardless of one's faith, each visitor can feel welcome and have an experience of spiritual elevation, embraced by those eternal values of which stone is the most natural and faithful guardian.
Construction workshop
Construction is a fundamental step in architecture. For this reason, YACademy offers its students the opportunity to participate in the process of producing their own ideas. Thus, the students will gain practical experience on construction sites and, above all, the authorship of projects built for excellent commissions, destined for a major media echo and capable of defining a turning point in their professional career.
Placement
At the end of teaching modules and workshop, YACademy’s Placement office will guarantee every student an internship or collaboration proposal in one of our partner studios.
