The role of the architect is multifaceted, evolving constantly in response to new technologies and societal needs. At Kengo Kuma and Associates, this balance is particularly evident in their innovative use of parametric architecture and their deep respect for cultural heritage. YACademy students had the opportunity to discuss these themes with Arch. Anteo Taro Boschi Sanada from Kengo Kuma and Associates, who offered a glimpse into the studio’s design philosophy and approach.

Parametric architecture: a tool for optimization

In the realm of modern architecture, parametric design often conjures images of complex, futuristic shapes. However, at Kengo Kuma and Associates, parametric tools are used not to originate but to refine and optimize concepts. As Sanada explained, their process begins with simple physical models.

“We don’t use parametric architecture to come up with the concept; we use it to optimize it” Sanada said. This pragmatic approach ensures that the designs are controlled and feasible while being innovative. By refining initial models with parametric tools, the team can enhance structural integrity, reduce costs, and iterate on the design efficiently.

Cultural layers and traditional influences

A defining characteristic of Kengo Kuma’s work is the incorporation of cultural and traditional elements, which infuses a sense of history and continuity into contemporary designs. This approach is deeply personal for Kuma, influenced by his upbringing in a traditional Japanese house and his profound respect for craftsmanship.

“Kuma was raised in a traditional Japanese house and has a lot of respect for craftsmen” Sanada noted. This respect translates into a design ethos that values traditional materials and techniques, integrating them seamlessly into modern architectural practices. Kuma’s early work in the Japanese countryside further enriched his philosophy, emphasizing simplicity and a close connection with nature.

Defining success in architecture

Success in architecture is not solely about aesthetics. For Kengo Kuma and Associates, a successful project is one where at least one element works perfectly well. This element can meet a variety of criteria, from structural innovation to community impact. Sanada emphasized that success can manifest in numerous ways, not just through visual appeal.

"Sometimes it could be the structural joint that works and you are the first one who did that”, Sanada remarked. This perspective highlights that success in architecture is multifaceted, involving both tangible achievements and intangible impacts on the community and environment.

Conclusion

The interview with Arch. Anteo Taro Boschi Sanada offered a profound look into the philosophy and practice at Kengo Kuma and Associates. By balancing the innovative potential of parametric design with a deep respect for cultural heritage, they create architecture that is both cutting-edge and timeless. This approach underscores the evolving role of architects - not just as designers of buildings, but as stewards of tradition, innovators of technology, and collaborators in the creation of our shared environment.

As architects, the challenge is to navigate this intricate balance, continually seeking ways to enhance our built environment while honoring the past and embracing the future.
